Sea Turtle Boeier Returns to Gulf

In a remarkable journey spanning continents, Boeier, a juvenile Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, has been successfully returned to her native Gulf of Mexico waters. Discovered entangled in fishing gear off the coast of the Netherlands in 2023, Boeier was transported to the Rotterdam Zoo for rehabilitation. After a year of care, she was flown to the Houston Zoo in October 2024, where she underwent further health assessments. On November 4, 2024, Boeier was released into the Gulf from Stewart Beach in Galveston, marking the culmination of a collaborative international rescue effort.

The Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, native to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, is the smallest and most endangered sea turtle species. This successful rescue and release underscore the importance of global cooperation in wildlife conservation and highlight the resilience of these remarkable creatures.
