Galveston Bay Sulfur Spill Finally Addressed After Months of Complaints from Fishermen
Galveston, TX – After months of complaints from local fishermen about a foul-smelling, yellow substance leaking into Galveston Bay, crews are finally working to contain and clean up the spill.
Fisherman Jason Reuter, who has spent his life navigating Galveston’s waters, first noticed the problem when he and his friends spotted two broken lines leaking from a plant along the Galveston Channel, across from Pelican Island. Video captured by Reuter showed the sulfur-like substance not only contaminating the water but also coating nearby rocks where wildlife was present.
“For months, we couldn’t get anywhere,” Reuter said. “The spill kept going, and nothing was being done.”
It wasn’t until the issue gained media attention that action was finally taken. The spill originated from Gulf Sulfur Services, but despite multiple inquiries, the company has yet to respond to requests for comment. However, after local fishermen raised concerns and contacted city officials, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the U.S. Coast Guard launched an investigation.
According to state environmental officials, the spill resulted from a sulfur pipe failure, which released the material onto the ground and into the water. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that sulfur spills can lead to acid rain, which poses a significant threat to fragile ecosystems.
The cleanup effort is now underway, much to the relief of local fishermen.
“I was super happy to see that they’re finally addressing it,” Reuter said. “It makes me feel good knowing our environment will be protected, so my kids and grandkids can continue fishing.”
The leak may be connected to a recent barge collision that severely damaged the Pelican Island Bridge, impacting its structure and causing an oil spill in the surrounding waters. Officials are continuing to assess the extent of the damage and its environmental impact.
As crews work to clean up the contamination, local fishermen hope this serves as a wake-up call for stronger environmental oversight in Galveston Bay.
