Galveston Secures $2M Grant for AI-Driven Traffic System

The City of Galveston has been awarded a $1.99 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) program to develop an AI-driven traffic signal system. This initiative aims to enhance traffic flow, improve emergency evacuation procedures, and optimize surge traffic management across the island.
The proposed system will utilize artificial intelligence to analyze vehicular and pedestrian data, allowing for adaptive traffic signal timing based on real-time conditions and seasonal variations. This technology is expected to reduce congestion, improve safety, and provide more efficient routes for both residents and visitors.

Initially, the system will be piloted along Seawall Boulevard, from 14th Street to 57th Street. Following the pilot phase, there are plans to expand the system throughout the island, making it a multi-year project aimed at comprehensive traffic management improvement.
This development is part of a broader effort to modernize Galveston’s transportation infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient travel for all. The integration of advanced technologies underscores the city’s commitment to leveraging innovation for the benefit of its community and visitors.
