Galveston Trash Collection Rate Increases
Effective October 1, 2024, the City of Galveston implemented new trash collection and recycling rates. These changes, approved by the Galveston City Council, aim to address rising operational costs and maintain essential sanitation services for the community. While the increases impact residential, church, and commercial customers, they also reflect the city's commitment to sustainable waste management.
Why the Rate Increases Were Necessary
The rate adjustments come in response to mounting costs for diesel fuel, equipment, and labor, which have risen by nearly 25% since 2021. Despite measures to improve efficiency, Galveston’s sanitation department faced a $500,000 annual deficit. Following an independent sanitation rate study, the council approved these changes to keep services financially viable and ensure the city can continue to meet the needs of its growing population.
Breakdown of New Trash Collection Rates
Residential Customers
- Monthly Refuse Collection: Increased from $24.97 to $29.49 per unit.
- Recycling Fee: A new fee of $3.18 per month has been introduced to cover the operational and administrative costs of the city’s recycling program.
Church Customers
- Monthly Refuse Collection: Raised from $27.84 to $35.49 for two carts.
- Additional Carts: Each extra cart now costs $6.
Commercial Customers
- Monthly Refuse Collection: Increased from $53.12 to $70.58, which includes one collection day per week and two carts.
- Additional Carts: Available at $34.73 per cart, with a maximum of four carts per business.
Residential Impacts and Benefits
For Galveston residents, the rate increase ensures continued reliable trash collection and expands support for the city's recycling initiatives. The new recycling fee is designed to sustain and improve recycling operations, helping reduce landfill waste and promote environmental sustainability on the island.
Supporting Local Churches and Businesses
Churches and commercial businesses, which play vital roles in Galveston’s community and economy, will also see adjusted rates. These updates reflect the rising cost of providing consistent and quality services while accommodating the specific needs of larger organizations.
Commitment to Sustainable Waste Management
The City of Galveston remains maintains a commitment to enhancing waste management services, including bulk items and sustainability programs. Residents are encouraged to participate in reusing and recycling when possible to maximize the impact of these services.
